417 – The (far more than four) Horsemen

In the aftermath of William the Conqueror’s devastating Harrying of the North, King Malcolm III of Scotland seizes the opportunity to raid Northern England, capitalizing on the chaos and destruction. Amid the scorched earth and displacement caused by William’s campaign, Malcolm’s forces engage in systematic pillaging, exploiting the vulnerability of the English countryside. The narrative delves into the grim realities of medieval warfare, the strategic motivations behind Malcolm’s incursion, and its implications for the local populace, revealing a complex interplay of power, survival, and opportunism in a time of turmoil.

  1. I have loved this podcast you have done an excellent job of making it interesting and fun to listen to. However I find it disgusting how you keep bringing up trump like he is the only person doing stupid stuff. I get dogging the guy in charge. Trump hasn’t been in charge for years. I don’t care about trump why is he relevant to so many different episodes. You could open your liberal eyes and realize not everybody shares you current politics. If your going to reference current politics at least spread it around. How is everybody still obsessed with trump? I don’t come here to hear what you think about current figures it turns me off. I have ran through all episodes as fast as I could and couldn’t get enough. Still love the way you do the history. Just remember the famous words of Michael Jordan. Republicans buy shoes also. I have been debating paying for patreon but I think I won’t simply for the fact you can’t keep it to history. And by the way anybody who thought buying Greenland was real is extremely ignorant. No serious person thought was real

    1. Hi Zach, something to remember is that people can dislike Trump without disliking Zach. Whenever someone makes fun of Trump he immediately tells his rally goers that actually the people are making fun of you. But they aren’t. They are making fun of Trump.

Just like if you mocked Bernie, it wouldn’t mean you were making fun of me.

But Trump realized that he could insulate himself from criticism if he convinced folks that he wasn’t a politician, he was an identity. And any attack on him is an attack on his voters identity.

It was brilliant, but also a lie.

I’m not making fun of you, or your family, or your friends. I’m just making fun of the guy who wanted to buy greenland.

And, by the way, I’m a serious person and he did want to buy greenland. He gave interviews about it.

One if his billionaire friends gave him the idea, and he was considering trading Puerto Rico for it.

      Even Fox News covered it.

Source: How he got the idea.

Source: How he wanted to basically sell Puerto Rico to get it.

And the reason why you didn’t know it was real, and thought that it was something only ignorant people believed, was because so much was happening in 2019 that it wasn’t even the biggest news story of the day. It should have been a massive multi week story that the US was trying to trade Puerto Rico for Greenland because a cosmetics billionaire told the President of the United States that it would be cool. But there were bigger stories happening at the same time…

Which was my whole point of bringing it up, because that’s basically the situation in the 1060s and 1070s. It’s just a firehose of events. And 2016 to 2022 was relevant for that because that’s when there were major stories and events happening literally every day. It was crazy and unrelenting in a way that 2023 isn’t.

I mean, it was a weeks long story when Biden shot down those UFOs in February… but when the secret UFO task force was revealed in 2017 everyone shrugged because /a lot was going on/.

  2. Jamie’s protestations before this episode against listeners’ impatience did make me chuckle. As someone who gets through 3-4 episodes a week, I totally sympathise with those listeners who are itching for the next episode. On the other hand, as an academic, I’m frankly astounded at the speed Jamie gets these episodes out given the level of research that goes into each one. So, as an impatient listener myself, here’s how I’ve dealt with it. The first time I caught up, I just went back to the beginning and started all over again. Fellow impatient listeners, you will not BELIEVE how much you’ve forgotten! I really really recommend you go back and start again. You will not regret this decision. I mean, I’ve watched both Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones a few times over, and the BHP is the podcast equivalent. Having listened to the entirety of the BHP twice over myself, I’m about to catch up a second time and this time I think I might take a greatest hits approach. I’m gonna start with the episodes on Penda cos I loved those. After that, I might indulge in a bit starry-eyed re-listening to the episodes covering Aethelflead, the Lady of Mercia, cos she’s a bit of a hero of mine. You’ll all have your own favourites. Those episodes are still there. So, my fellow impatient listeners, go back… indulge!… enjoy!…
