Love this section.
Do you have the map sources? I would love to use some of these for my classes.
Hey jamie,
I’m Bas from Haarlem, The Netherlands. I gotta say, i really like your show. I am listening every morning in the car to work. I actually look forward to the drive because of the show. I’m thinking of signing up, just to support you, but i have some other obligations that need also require funds. You know how it is. Anyway, i was browsing through the maps sections and this one gave a 404:

Just my $0,02. Oh, i am currently reading this book: Caesar, Life of a Colossus, by Research Fellow Adrian Goldsworthy. It’s a very good read if you like the Roman history. That’s it!
Thanks, it’s all fixed!
Bas, I have found Adrian Goldsworthy a fantastic read for all I have read of his so far. He has also expanded into Napoleonic era historical fiction
I would love to see the land control progression of the different Anglo-Saxon kingdoms from the early migration period up until Alfred the Great.
I am with Steve C on this.
Agree with Steve C and Timothy B and would add – we could really do with a map showing the period we’ve just covered on the podcast – the extension of Mercia and Wessex in the light of Athelflaed and Edward’s campaigns. I’ve been disappointed with Google searches: there’s a good one on the Great Heathen Army laying waste to the Heptarchy and another showing the resolution. But after that? Its so odd that the story of the making of England is so untold.
Wow! I love maps! And I really love this section. Looking forward to further updates as they come. In the meantime, I have so much material to explore. It took me 4 months to catch up listening to the nearly 300 podcasts. Now I will need another bunch of months to add the visual to my memories. This whole thing is such a wonderful service for your listeners. Thank you very much.
Love the maps!!!!
Thanks for the maps!! Just listening now to the episodes on Wales, and the Scottish kings/mormeres after Cnut, and being able to follow along visually helps the information stick in my brain better.
Hi Jamie, thanks for the maps. Difficult to come by I am sure – and some of the older sources are oversimplifications of the the fluidity of people and borders but invaluable to make sense of the places. I am often surprised just how far warbands travelled. The old dark ages type stereotype of people never moving more than 2 miles from their places of birth is although true for some – another oversimplifcation. Anyway keep up the stories as I am learning and enjoying so much.
BTW: (on Edge browser) I get a “{“message”:”Classic styles are no longer supported; see https://blog.mapbox.com/deprecating-studio-classic-styles-d8892ac38cb4 for more information”}” message for the Cameron maps at the top of this page. The might need to be embedded as graphics or something???
Cheers
Wot? No maps of Guthrum’s conquest of Wessex? Nor of Swein’s or Cnut’s battles? No maps of Normandy?
I love the maps, Jamie. I’ve only just stumbled across them, although I know you’ve mentioned them from time to time throughout your wonderful series.
Thank you for all your efforts.
Oh I’m so happy I found the maps. Thank you!
If making a one off donation how long do we get access to the extras? Asking this as subscription culture is killing me (financially speaking) so as much as I love this podcast the regularity of people using subscription models is tiresome. I am more likely to make donations a few times a year rather than subscribe if this is an option. I donate to Wikipedia with one off donations when I can.
Hi Nina, I think your best bet with something like that is to buy a Gift Membership and then redeem it yourself. That way you’ll have access, but there won’t be any chance of it automatically renewing. :)
My son and I drive an hour each way to his school. He stopped playing in his movies captivated by your Podcast and now we both listen to you and then discuss. We are only on episode 209, but it has been wonderful sharing deep thoughts and following with archeology discoveries and photos with my eight year old. Thank you! We found you and listen through Amazon.
I’m on my third listening of the episodes, I think. The Anglo-Saxon period remains my favorite and all the names I cannot pronounce or keep straight. I keep testing them out in my head as dog names. Penda is at the top of the list. This map section is great.
Just got around to listening to the podcast. I’m only on s1e28 but loving it so far. I work as a home delivery driver so I get through about 20 episodes a week. But I’m loving how history shows that us pesky Welsh have been trouble all throughout history lol
I know you’re based in Portland, Or and wonder if you ever have gatherings in the area like informal meetings at pubs in the area. I moved to Hillsboro last year.
