When I was visiting my brother in Portland, we (of course) went to Powells. And when I told him I wanted to see if they had anything on the Heptarchy, he didn't give me any grief for being too obscure because HE was looking for Icelandic sagas. I picked up Max Adams' The King in the North: The Life and Times of Oswald of Northumbria. I'm about a third of the way through and really enjoying it. Mr. Adams definitely has a different take on some things than Jamie does. It's always good to remember that there is no one viewpoint this or any other period of history. There are also several nice maps, a glossary, notes on place name elements, and some simplified family trees.Has anyone else read this?
