G'day WillyK – the main comp is the AFL, the team I follow is Port Adelaide FC- which has been going since 1870, making it one of the oldest clubs in the world. The other much hated South Australian Club is the Adelaide FC- the other big clubs would be Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton, Richmond & West Coast.  Aussie Rules is getting out there, with this year a few Yankee basketballers being drafted into some club's development squads.  All the best, I suppose it's ice hockey season up there now, we have just started the 1st Ashes Test in Cricket against the “old enemy”  – the Poms.

Finally some footy love in the polls!  My husband played footy for a few seasons here in the US (on a local team) and people still just give us that blank stare of “WTF is footy?”  It's a quick trip to the ER if you're not prepared is what!  (True story: we were on a cruise to Alaska during the AFL Grand Final and he went to all the bars on the ship begging to get them to tune it to a channel showing the match.  No luck.  The fellow in the cabin next to us, however, was getting score updates and would holler them over the balcony to us.  Of all the people on the ship, they put the two footy fans together.  What luck!)Anyways, we haven't a favorite team in the AFL - he loves them all and just wants to watch them NOT at 2:00 in the morning.  :)

Its  a bit of a bummer having to wait until 2:00am to watch a gameHere in Oz of course its almost 24/7 – but I suppose you really appreciate the games when you get them.  Of course its cricket season now, which is Ok while the Ashes were on, but they have finished and we are counting the sleeps until the first bounce – go Ports!

I agree with DanDownUnder and Jessaiminine.  AFL is the best.  Been a Brisbane fan since their glory days back in 2003 or so but can't find it here in the States anymore.

I like to think “Auzzy Rules” is an addition that you add to any sport to make the rules 100% weirder, 200% more violent* and the shorts 50% shorter and more questionable…The winter olympics recently should have seen an outbreak of Auzzy Rules Curling! :D*Sadly, there can be no Auzzy Rules Ice Hockey, as this is already a fight waiting for a sport to break out!
