Just finished Queen Emma and the Vikings: Power, Love, and Greed in 11th Century England.  Emma was from Normandy and was married to the English King Aethelred (1002) and, later, his Danish Viking successor, Cnut (1016).  Two of her sons ruled England – Edward the Confessor and Harthacnut (son of Cnut).  By the end of the book, you may not necessarily like her, but maybe you understand why she made the choices she did during her life, given the situations she was in.  I got the digital version on NOOk, but it's also available on Amazon. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/queen-emma-and-the-vikings-harriet-obrien http://www.amazon.com/Queen-Emma-Vikings-Century-England
