The Portland Highland Games for all you in Oregon is coming up in a month. On Facebook Jaime and I were joking about how the British are most responsible for popularizing Scottish culture like the kilt and bagpipes. Thanks Sir Walter Scott. I think its allot like the popularizing of biker gangs now days or like how Jaime mentioned earlier about the “noble savage”. Cuz I've read that in the 1730's the British hated highlanders but by the end of the 18th century it was school to be a highlander. Funny how that happened.

around the time of the 2 Jacobite rebellions highlanders were demonized by many people in both England and southern Scotland, at best described as noble savages, at worst sub-human.This made the atrocities that followed Culloden far easier to carry out. The rebellion was used as an excuse for some pretty disgusting ethnic cleansing, followed by the Clearances. Most of the atrocities were carried out by Scots and I'm not sure this has ever been dealt with openly & honestly by the nation since. The reason highlands remain empty now is as a direct result of this.
