Hi everyone.I'm Chris, and I'm from Poole, Dorset UK. It is a little old town on the south coast of Britain. It is built around Poole Harbour (3rd Largest natural harbour in the world.) It has been settled since prehistory (an ancient hollowed out log boat is on display in the town museum). The name is possibly more modern and derived from the Celtic Bol (Place near a pool or creek). It was a key strategic point for the Kingdom of Wessex, and was the first invasion point for Canute. It was used as a medieval port and was granted a Town Charter. It then went to become the site of numerous shipping routes and was infamous for its smuggling. The town was Parliamentarian during the civil war, but the nearby Corfe Castle (now wonderfully ruined and a frequent place of play during my childhood) was Royalist and had a chequered history. The town was involved in the North Atlantic fishing industry and was a major embarkation point for D Day. Just off the headlands outside the harbour are sunken tanks that are popular for divers. It has one of the best beaches in the UK, the headquarters for Sunseeker Luxuary motor yachts and Sandbanks was the fourth most expensive property area per square foot in the world. Means I'll never own a home where I grew up as the 1% have priced us out!! Oh and did I mention that the town has oil too......So that is where I grew up; plenty of local history. It wasn't far from Portsmouth, Portland, Devon, or 2 hours from London so I've seen quite a lot.I came across this podcast looking for a alternative to the excellent history of Rome by Mike Duncan, and it is just as good. I'm so glad to have found it!Take care everyone, I look forward to chatting and if anyone wants to know more about Poole or Southern England feel free to drop me a line.

Cheers. I live in London now, and work in govt offices near Westminster Abbey. It cheers me up everything I look out of the window…..no matter how much work sucks, I know the Abbey was there before me and will be there long after me!

Hi CarolI'd like to say it was for some cool history related reason, but it is more linked to my love of Warhammer 40k. The idea of a futuristic inquisition was horribly compelling. The Medina part comes from the Duke of Medina Sergovia ofArmada fame.
