My name is Bruce Shultes.I now live in Albany, but I was raised in Berne. For over a century, my family operated a general store in Berne. When I was about 10, my parents purchased a former hotel across the street from our store and we moved the inventory there where we had more space available.Anyway, as I was growing up, I spent time exploring the upper floors and attic of the hotel. In the attic I discovered shutters with rifle slits, so I believe the hotel was built sometime before the start of the French & Indian wars. This was what started my initial interest in history.
Welcome to the community, Bruce! One question though, and I am not trying to be rude, but where is Berne?
Berne is about 20 miles southwest from Albany. It is in the Helderberg mountains, which are part of the Apalachins. The cornerstone of the Lutheran church located in Berne says that it is 1,500 feet above sea level. Since the Hudson River still shows a rise and fall with the tides of the Atlantic Ocean, that gives you some idea of how rapidly the elevation increases as you travel from Albany to Berne.
