I was cracking up with Rowan Atkinson doing the Chariots of Fire bit, and of course Her Majesty parachuting out of the helicopter, such a cute bit! Perhaps I'm biased, but I do kinda wish there was a reference to Doctor Who as that is just as big a cultural symbol I think as Bond or anything else they showcased. The beginning part with the children singing actually made me cry and was my favorite part — did anyone else get a Tolkein feel to the “forging” of the Olympic Rings?  ???

you must have missed the TARDIS noise during the music montage?  It happened in the 70s portion, I think during a Queen song. And apparently, on the video screens in the stadium was the TARDIS going through the time vortex, but it wasn't shown on TV.

Sure did, they also played a small blipet of the song "concerning hobbits" at some point, but I don't remember when.  I totally missed the Tardis.  Lord Voldemort was awesome and scary.  The one thing I hoped to see was a reference to Radiohead but I figured Thom York has some ideological problem with the games and chose not to represent, but then again, maybe I just missed it.  All in all, it was fun to watch.  Way to go London!

I distinctly feel that perhaps NBC cut that (Tardis noise) out of the coverage? now I'm kicking myself for chucking it out of the DVR queue. Also didn't catch the “concerning Hobbits” but then that makes me wonder what they were getting at, because wouldn't that imagery indicate that the Olympics are evil? But open letter to NBC in particular and rest of the US networks in general: please, please, PLEASE knock off the inane chatter of the "commentators" to say that I could care less what Matt Lauer and whats-her-face have to say would be giving too much importance....do what VH1 does and have pop-up info...then guess what? you don't have to pay for those idiots to sit there and talk over what the audience actually tuned in to see and hear. (okay, the air up here on my soapbox is getting a bit thin, I'll get down, now)

I Agree.  My earlier comment was on the presentation by Danny Boyle and the volunteers who performed in the ceremonies.  NBC’s part was absolutely maddening.  I don’t want to hear some guy they hired talking about an old hymn that the children are singing. I want to hear the children singing the old hymn.  NBC said that they tailored their presentation of the ceremonies to the American people.  I suppose that is a comment on us and is very offensive.  And don’t get me started on their “censorship” of the tribute to the two dead U.S. servicemen and the requiem for the victims of the 7/7 terror attacks; a detail I heard on NPR the day after I posted my original message.  Ryan Seacrest,… Really!  Well, please let me join you on your soapbox.  I’m hoping there’s enough air for both of us.  But I don’t understand how the song “Concerning Hobbits” indicates that the Olympics are evil.  Perhaps I’m missing something but I am interested.

sorry….not the song indicating evilness of the Olympics, but the visual imagery of the forging of the Olympic ring being very very similar to the forging of the One Ring, which the One Ring symbolizes evil. I personally am so so tired of things in general being dumbed down for the majority (NBC insultingly "tailoring this to the American people") because that only leads in one direction: down. Granted, going back over different posts here, etc, I realize that I can be pretty dumb, myself, but in general people are a lot more intelligent than they are given credit for. This is the main reason why I just cannot listen for more than maybe 5 minutes at a time to morning "news" shows. What really sucks is that NBC has exclusive rights to Olympic television broadcasting --for the US at least-- into perpetuity so I see no remedy. Maybe watching Telemundo? might be fun  ;Dnow what was the tribute to the US servicemen? I have not heard anything about that from any source and I agree that's shameful if it was cut.
