My wife and I were thinking of going over the pond and enjoying somewhere in Britain over our Christmas break. Given that this is winter, we were thinking about keeping it simple and sticking to a major metro area with good public transportation (ie London). But I wonder if anyone else has any good travel ideas for this time of the year in Britain?

I would like to advise Newcastle, but that may be because I live there and so am biased. It has quite a few nice sites, such as some roman forts and it has a fairly reliable metro system.
