I might have to rethink this movie idea- the number of movies, documentaries and tv shows is growing exponentially; I don't think I can manage this all by my lonesome! Perhaps my fellow Anglophiles would like to form a "movie club"- like a book club, but based in the forums. We could all watch the same movie during a specific week, come online and discuss it, or watch different movies and offer our opinions!Feedback?

Ok, I've advertised this on Facebook!  I'm really looking forward to this and think it'll be fun.  Here's my suggestion.  We collectively pick a movie (or list of movies) and then we can start the discussions in this Board under it's own title. For example, if we did The Eagle (please no) then we'd start a topic titled "The Eagle" and discuss the film in that topic.  I think it would keep it organized and allow people who are new to come in, see what movies they should watch and still be able to join in the conversation on the older films in film club.

I, of course, am in.First suggestion- the movies should be relatively easily available. I am in Canada and it can be impossible sometimes to errrrm... legally.... get movies. Canada Netflix sucks (theres nothing on it really).

I might be up for this.I'm gonna put forward The Thing (1982)Epic suspenseful masterpiece? Or unsophisticated gorefest?

Well there are some truly awful films that cover the period we've already talked about. For example, Boudicca Warrior Queen starring Alex Kingston. Which might be good for a laugh but nothing more.  The Romans have foil for armor. It's a hell of an experience. As for serious films, I'm planning on seeing The Iron Lady soon though I'm honestly not familiar enough with her personal biography to be able to judge it at this point. HBO has done a bunch of biopics that might be fun. The Gathering Storm and Into The Storm are about Churchill. The Special Relationship. There are a bunch. But really this is something you all should decide. This is your club. I'm just part of it and supporting it. I'll help out of course. For example, I'll announce when you pick movies so that more people can get involved.  But this really should be your club. :)(and I love The Thing, and Melissa and I just finished a Kurt Russellathon.  But I suspect that people will want films about Britain not taught psychological thrillers featuring Wilfred Brimley prior to his oatmeal days).

Ah, the main brief didn't stipulate it had to be Brit related so I assumed it was a bit more general. Nevermind, how about 28 days later? Same points of discussion, lol.The Thing, is like my favourite horror film ever. Its also hilarious that it was release in the same month as E.T and Bladerunner.

Jamie,Is it possible to be too eclectic? Kurt Russell? I own very few DVD/Blue Ray's but Big Trouble in Little China is one I have to watch from time to time so own it I do. Any movie that has Snake Plisskin as its hero is also ok with me...as usual, I digress. I will follow the will/suggestions of the crowd anywhere and watch anything, as I proved above. ee

A film I would suggest for the group would be Sixty Six, a coming of age story of a boy living in North London. He's preparing for his bar mitzvah which coincides with the 1966 World Cup Final. It has a great cast, including Peter Serafinowicz and Catherine Tate.

Sixty Six sounds like a good watch.  And it is on Netflix, always a bonus.  Adding it to my list of flicks whether we pick it or not.  :D

I don't normally watch football related movies as I don't have an interest in the sport but I did enjoy Fever Pitch, which was a great movie so I guess Sixty Six could be be a winner!!  ;)  It has a pretty good cast too and looks quite funny. If it isn't available to stream on LoveFilm I might not be able to watch it though. I'll wait until it has been decided for sure if this is the movie everyone is going to watch.

As there have been no guidelines for how this is going to work yet, might I make a few suggestions to the club's creator, Diane.

    • I think that any suggestion for the movie club should be posted by a certain date and chosen simply by majority vote as listed in the posts. For example if one movie is mentioned more times than any other, that is the movie chosen to watch.
    • To keep things simple, the first two weeks of the month could be to announce the next opening for movie suggestions and allow these suggestions to be posted and decided upon. Week three to watch the movie and week four to discuss on the forum.
    • The chosen movie should be announced (and probably made sticky so it stands out more) a few days before viewing to allow time for people to obtain a copy.
    • Is a week long enough for people to watch the movie before discussing on the forum?
    • One movie every four weeks seems reasonable considering the amount of time it might take for suggestions to be posted and decided upon.
    • Documentaries should be included if possible but this depends on how easy it is to obtain a copy in different countries.
    • ONE FOR JAMIE - maybe have sub-boards under 'Entertainment' so that, if for instance this takes off, there will be the sub-board 'Film Club' where we could start a new topic for each movie we watch to make navigation easier. The same could be said for the book club if that takes off and it looks like games/gaming is popular among a few members too.
    • Keep previous movie club topics open for new member who might want to contribute.
    • Maybe, for a bit of fun, at the end of a 6 or 12 month period include a poll and see which was the club's favourite movie, which could include separate discussions about why.

    Hope these suggestions help  :)

Great suggestions and if this takes off, I'm totally fine making a sub forum. Also, if a movie is picked, I can announce it on the Podcast if you'd like.

That's a good idea Jamie. Might spread the word about the film club and get a few more interested members. All we need now is someone in the driving seat to get this going  ;)

Wait, I have ideas?  I will certainly not back down from people liking ideas of mine, whatever they might be.  Also, I'd love to watch Sixty Six, even though I have absolutely no idea what it's about and have never heard of it.  Oh and I will definitely nominate Chris for the driver's seat.  *Joins Jamie in staring.  Awkward silence ensues.*

I will take on the roll of captain if everyone is happy with that. I'm not sure how good at it I will be though as I don't check in every day to see what's happening on the forum. I am happy to try and get things moving in the right direction and I will try and do what I can for keeping things on track with timing. Can I ask that everyone take a quick look at the guidelines (on page 2 on this thread) and see if you are happy with them. Please do make any suggestions for amending them. When these are finalized maybe Jamie will post them at the top of the film club board for easy navigation for any new members who might be interested. Please do let me know if you are happy with the timing:

    • To keep things simple, the first two weeks of the month could be to announce the next opening for movie suggestions and allow these suggestions to be posted and decided upon. Week three to watch the movie and week four to discuss on the forum.

If we are all unanimous about the guidelines or, if changes have been made to them that we are happy about, the film club can get going. For now though it looks as though Sixty Six has been agreed upon (mls has already seen the film and I will be watching it this weekend) so if you do get the chance to obtain a copy soon we will be able to watch it and discuss it in the next few days....hopefully  :)

Great! Glad to have you on board  :)We are just about to start discussing Sixty Six, which I am hoping a few people have managed to watch now. If you get chance to find (and watch) this film we would like to hear your views. As it is very short notice and you might not be able to watch it in time, wait until next week when we will be suggesting new films and choosing one to watch and discuss for next month. If you have any film suggestions do let us know by adding them to the Film Suggestions thread.
