This is an old one and many of you may not have heard of it but Sid Meier's Colonisation (1994) was an awesome game. OK the graphics sucked and it was limited compared to his masterpiece Civilisation but it still rocked. Even now after 19 years I still play it now and then, in fact in the middle of a game at the moment which will probably take me a month to complete if I play on and off like I do.For those not familiar with it you start in 1492 with a ship with a pioneer and soldier and have to explore the New World as one of four nations (English, Dutch, Spanish or French) and build colonies whilst dealing with the other European powers and of course the Native Americans. The idea is to build up your forces before fighting a war of independence against the Mother Country. Is anyone else familiar with this game and if so does anyone still play it, or am I the only one?

I haven't played it, but now I want to.Love old school games.  I still pull the sheet off my old desk top and play the text "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" on occasion.I may look into playing this now.  I'm guessing it's out of print, so I'll check out Amazon and a few other places.

Yeah I find it will only run on an XP or prior system  >:(Even using an emulator I have had no luck running it on newer machines.I still have the CD I bought for the PC all that time ago but sure you can get it for nothing in some parts of the internet, not that I'm encouraging that kind of thing........ ;) The main reason I say this is it can be hard to track down a legit copy as with lots of old school games.

The easiest way to play COL now is probably to buy the add on pack for Civ 4, its a remake of the original in almost every way, they slightly tweaked how the founding fathers worked but it is still good and will run on modern machines.  God I played the original so much! Though I tended to find it was most fun in the early to mid game and towards the end it got a bit tedious with the sheer amount of units you'd be moving around trying to thwart the old world armies.

You can get it legitimately on GOG.com http://www.gog.com/game/sid_meiers_colonizationIf you sign up GOG will provide you with an emulator that will run the game on modern systems. I've used GOG for other games like Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper and would highly recommend them.

    Is Colonisation like Alpha Centuri?

A cursory glance tells me it likely isn't. However, if you're looking for a game like Alpha Centauri, it appears that Civilization: Beyond Earth, set to release this October, is being advertised as a sort of 'Alpha Centauri 2'. It's being developed by Firaxis, and shares much of the same team that worked on Alpha Centauri.
