    I thought corn came from America? was there something else that they knew as corn that also had 'ears'?

    The proper term for American corn is maize.  Corn was a general term for grain before Americans repurposed the word to mean maize.  It's similar to how American moose == Eurasian elk and American elk == red deer.

    Yep, Greg is correct.  I think I mentioned it in a later episode (because I got quite a few emails asking about it).  But yes, Corn is generic grain except inside the US.  :)
