Since Jamie referenced Beowulf, I'd like to recommend The Best Beowulf edition I've seen. It's the Seamus Heaney translation - with fantastic illustrations. Almost every page has an annotated photo that really adds to the atmosphere of the region in the Iron Age. Geats? Jutes? Danes? I had to look up where the Geats came from (Sweden). But when you look on a map, OK, it really isn't that far to Jute land (now part of Denmark). And some of the objects pictured in the book were found were in Schleswig, the southern part of the Jute peninsula. One map referenced the islands to the west as Frisian islands. Aha! Things are coming together for this cartophile.
