Yes, while the church has had some bad moments, I think when judging how people & organisations behave should be judged by both the standards of the time (not ours) and also with a weighted view, i.e. how many positive actions are performed day-in, day-out across centuries and countries, against any negative actions and also consider what would have taken place if that person/institution was not in place (e.g. an absence of the church may not guarantee that any witches, or some other group in society, would not be burned).
