Oh for a very long time blunt weapons like maces were seen as acceptable weapons for holy orders.  It's so ridiculous.But it's important to keep in mind that Mercia didn't get along at all with Northumbria, which was a major hub of Christianity on the island.  So if this is battle plunder, it wouldn't be terribly surprising to find it came from Northumbria, and then you'd have a reasonable source for the christian items.  I chatted with Dr Kevin Leahy about sourcing the material and the lack of any serious workshops at this period, and that's something that will be going live this week (to round out these talks) so that might help answer some of your questions.  Though they'll probably just raise even more questions, haha!
