I'd also heard that the mace was a technicality that allowed men in holy orders to get around the injunction against drawing blood, but I've since heard that's a myth (see ).  Maces were popular w/ everyone, and priests and bishops, who often got their positions for pecuniary reasons rather than any great pacifist leanings, used a variety of weapons as needed.  Don't know if that's as true of Anglo-Saxon times as it was later, but I don't see why not!Suzanne
