The Hollow Crown is excellent but The Bard is not good history. Shakespeare's Kings by John Julius Norwich is great.  It will walk through  some of the plays.  Shakespeare as a playwright had to work within the confines of his culture, king and country.  He was trying to make money, to quote one of the interpreters at The Globe  “money is honey” and sensational sold then as it sells now.
