As of late, I have been with SCA, though I've done a couple different avenues.  As for making mead, it is, by far, worth the time to make it.  It can take a bit, though there are a number of different ones that require a fairly minimal ferment/aging (6 months or so).  If you're interested, let me know and I'd be happy to pass along some tips (I may also have a spare bottle in my private stash).  Cheers!Jenny
