I noticed the parallels between this myth and The Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Leguin. School on island guarded by gate keeper, test to get in, combat with double – in the novels case with the hero’s double who is called the shadow. Leguin in the 1960s could not imagine women in a medieval world having enough power so the school is male only.
I would be sceptical of gender roles of Demi gods in mythology reflecting the gender roles of the myth makers. Athena was the warrior goddess of ancient Athens and even the rest of the Greek world thought they were a bit sexist.
