Members Only 28 – Development of Western Science

So before we get into medicine and how it developed in the Anglo Saxon world on the main podcast, it might be a good idea to chat about science and its development. To start with, we have to address what Science is. And oddly, that’s a rather contentious word. If you don’t believe me, try to get a psychologist and a chemical engineer to agree on a definition.

Are we going to say that it is defined by the methodology, that science is only for matters that have theories that can be tested and replicated? In that case, is theoretical physics, science? What about sociology and anthropology? Do they count, because there are so many variables that you never have a pure perfect replication of a test when dealing with people. Do we loosen the definition? In that case, how do we feel about psychology? What if we loosen it even farther? Does astrology count?

Is there a difference between science and technology? Or are they one and the same?

What definition can we come up with that everyone can agree that this stuff over here is science and that stuff over there isn’t?
